At least 31 Persons including Children as a Result of Stampede during Programme Organized by a Church in Rivers State

At least 31 persons have died in a stampede at a programme organized by a Pentecostal church, Kings Assembly, in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

Police spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the casualty figure.

The stampede occurred at the Polo Club in Port Harcourt where the church, known as Kings Assembly, was said to have invited members of the public to partake in the event where clothes, shoes, gift items, food, and lots more were promised to be shared to congregants.

It was gathered that guests began arriving at the Polo Club as early as 6:30 am for the event slated for 9 am, but met the gate locked.

However, at about 8 am, some sportsmen arrived and opened the small entrance to have their training session, only for the crowd to see it as an opportunity to access the tent that was mounted by the church for the program.

The tragedy occurred as the crowd of persons attempted to push through to gain access to the venue to partake in the palliatives.

The church had organised the outreach to give out palliatives to the underprivileged in society in previous years before the unexpected occurred today.
