Germany: COVID-19 death toll passes 100,000

Germany announced a record death toll and coronavirus infections on Thursday as the total death toll surpassed 100,000 and its worst virus wave still breaks as a new government prepares to take the reins.

Germany weathered past episodes of the pandemic better than many other European countries but has recently seen a resurgence with intensive care beds filling up quickly.

Europe’s largest economy recorded 351 deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of fatalities since the start of the pandemic to 100,119, according to the Robert Koch Institute.

The weekly incidence rate also reached an all-time high of 419.7 new infections per 100,000 people, announced the RKI.

The escalating health crisis poses an immediate challenge to the new coalition government, which will replace Angela Merkel’s cabinet next month.

The recovery in Germany comes as Europe has become the epicenter of the pandemic again, with the continent in some countries with the slow uptake of vaccines, the highly contagious Delta variant, colder weather bringing people indoors, and the easing of the Limitations fights.
